Abstract

Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) was embedded into polyethersulfone (PES) membrane matrix from the source of NCC which transferred into polymer solvent (N,N-dimethylacetamide) via solvent exchange process. Various mass ratio of NCC suspension was employed for preparing casting solution containing 20 wt.% PES and 1 wt.% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Distilled water was applied as coagulant. The membranes were characterized using dye removal, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and hydrophilicity and water content determination. It was found that presence of NCC led to thin but dense skin-layer and significant higher hydrophilicity as well as higher water flux. 1.2 wt.% NCC in dope solution showed two fold higher water permeability and 20% higher acid orange 7 removal compared with neat PES membrane
